Like basketball played at a really high level? (I do, though there is an argument of bias there). Go Clubs has tickets to give away for this Sunday's Taipans game against the Breakers of NZ. All you have to do to be eligible for the draw is for your club to have completed a club health check in 2016. The draw will be held Thursday afternoon. If you are wondering the health check can be found at www.goclubs.com.au

The new netball courts at Martyn Street were officially opened on Friday 11 November 2016. The expanded Martyn Street Reserve netball complex was officially opened by Mayor Bob Manning and Queensland Treasurer Curtis Pitt, highlighting a major investment in the sport. The $3.86 million redevelopment was jointly funded by Cairns Regional Council ($2.1m) and the Queensland Government ($1.5m), with a $250,000 contribution from Cairns Netball. “The redevelopment of the Martyn Street complex means Cairns Netball can now host major tournaments and there is room for the sport to grow. It provides the opportunity for more kids to start playing sport and that leads to a healthier and more active community.” Mayor Bob Manning The complex will be a host venue at the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games in May 2017.

The Sculpture Botanica Cairns 2016 Art Trail (1 Oct-5 Nov) launched at the Cairns Botanic Gardens last Friday is a must see – a combined effort from Friends of the Botanic Gardens, Cairns and Saltwater Creek Basketry Group. Wonderful initiative! Although it runs all month I suggest you see it soon. Each installment is made from natural materials from the Gardens and will eventually succumb to the weather (especially if the rain continues). I went for a walk around Centenary Lakes on the weekend, and I saw some of the Sculpture artwork, it was amazing. But I couldn't find the piece that I created for this collection of works. I'm sure it is out there! - Deb

Cairns workers are encouraged to start their day in a healthier way on National Ride2Work Day. Cairns Regional Council (CRC) will serve up a free breakfast to cyclists who join the commuter community on Wednesday 12 October. Held annually, Ride2Work Day encourages residents to hop on their bikes and use pedal power to reach their workplace. CRC will support the initiative with a free breakfast for cyclists at the Esplanade Western Events Lawn, near the lagoon, from 6:30am to 8:30am, helping to fuel cyclists for the work day. Participants can also get a bicycle “health check” and pick-up the latest cycling map for the region. Mayor Bob Manning said the day also aimed to raise awareness of two-wheeled commuters and their rights on the road. “Sharing the road is something we should do every day, not just on Ride2Work Day,” Cr Manning said. “By looking out for each other, we can all make our roads a safer place.” Cyclists can register to be part of Ride2Work Day via the Bicycle Network website www.bicyclenetwork.com.au.
