With the start of the cyclone season just a few weeks away, residents are encouraged to learn more about disaster preparation at the Disaster Coordination Centre Open Day. As part of Queensland’s Get Ready Week, Cairns Regional Council will throw open the doors of the Cairns Disaster Centre at 79/61-79 Windarra Street, Woree on Saturday 8 October from 9:00am to 1:00pm. All members of the community are invited to attend. At the open day, there will be plenty of information on how to prepare your home and your family and you can get advice directly from our disaster management team. It’s important that children are involved in the planning process and know what to do if there is a disaster. There will also be market stalls, free food and giveaways including 2 household emergency kits, SES volunteers to give sandbagging demonstrations and a Queensland Fire Service crew to talk about fire prevention and management.

Can you help us with the history behind the names of some of our parks? In August 2016, we sent out a call for help on the history behind the names for some of our parks. "We have around 600 parks and public open spaces in the Cairns region and many of them are named after people who have contributed greatly to our region but, sadly, there are instances where the attribution has not been recorded." - Mayor Bob Manning We have received quite a lot of information from our initial call for help to the Cairns community, but we still need historical information on quite a few parks. Visit the Go Clubs News/Updates page for a list of the parks.

Southside walking track to close for upgrade. Ivan Evans Walk will be closed from 16 September 2016 until further notice to allow for essential repairs and upgrades. A recent audit of the track found that improvements were needed for safety and amenity. Initial works will include clearing fallen trees, loose rocks and other debris, repair or replacement of damaged steps, improved drainage to prevent ongoing erosion and new signage. While it’s sad that this track will be out of action for a while, the results will be worth it. Plus, there are many other great walking tracks to enjoy in the meantime, including the Red, Blue and Green Arrow tracks on Mount Whitfield.

Starting Thursday 29 September, both the Go Clubs and Council websites are being upgraded. This upgrade will mean that the interactive functions of Go Clubs will not be available. We hope to have the upgrade done and dusted in a week, but are booking out two weeks to cover all contingencies. During this time, we will be letting you know about any news that comes in, via our facebook site https://www.facebook.com/goclubscairns. We apologise for this inconvenience, especially for those clubs that have been powering through their accreditation. It's a shame to lose your momentum. Please bear with us during this time.

"Cairns World Record" is raising funds for the Salvation Army, but to be successful they need the people of Cairns to help them. What is this world record you ask, it is for "the most people whistling simultaneously in the one location", you've probably heard the ads on the radio. To break the record, they need at least 1,000 people to register and join in at Fogarty Park on the Esplanade early on Sunday morning 30 October 2016. If you are in the first 1,000 people to register, there are some cool gifts as well. If your club trains on a Sunday morning, what better way to finish up than to join this World Record attempt. You need to be at Fogarty Park before 7:30am. There are no age restrictions, it will be fun and it will cost you nothing, except a bit of your time. And it's for a good cause! Each registration will attract a donation by a local company which will go to the Salvation Army. To find out more, visit the website www.cairnsworldrecord.com.au. You can also hear the tune you will have to whistle on the day. So get practicing now.

What is your clubs mission? Along with the constitution, a good mission statement can help define the direction of the club and inform future decisions on facilities, culture and the overall club experience.
